According to the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT):
“Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga.”
Yoga therapy is a mind-body approach that treats the individual as a whole. It is a process where the client and yoga therapist work together to develop specific health goals based on the client’s needs. The yoga therapist uses the various tools and teachings of yoga to create a personalized practice that the client can take away and do on their own in order to move towards better health. As a result, the client takes an active role in their journey towards healing and wellness.
Yoga therapy can be an ideal introduction to yoga for a beginner, and it can also deepen the knowledge of a more experienced yoga practitioner. No previous experience or knowledge of yoga is necessary.
What conditions are helped by yoga therapy?
Yoga therapy can help with a wide range of health concerns such as muscular and joint pain (e.g. lower back pain, sciatica, arthritis), respiratory issues (e.g. asthma, COPD), digestive issues (e.g. IBS), mental health issues (e.g. anxiety, depression, stress, grief), auto-immune conditions, circulatory conditions, long-term illnesses, cancer, pain management and women’s health issues.
What happens during the sessions?
The initial session comprises of a comprehensive interview that will allow the yoga therapist to design a tailored personal practice for the client based on their health issues, needs, goals, physical abilities, energy levels, lifestyle, interests and personality. The follow-up sessions will look at the client’s progress, and the practice will be adjusted and revised continually to suit the individual. All sessions will conclude with a restorative yoga practice.
Yoga therapy sessions are held on a one-to-one basis.
As your yoga therapist, I will hold a safe, supportive, empathic and non-judgemental space where we can work together to meet your goals. We will work at a pace and level that is suitable and comfortable for you. Together, we will come up with a personalized plan that meets your specific requirements and interests, and you can continue to practise this at home.
